The Light Brigade

LI: To identify and understand literary devices used in ballad poems

LI: To understand ballad poems tell a story

For Reading this week we read a poem created by Alfred Lord Tennyson, this poem was about the light brigade and is the most famous poem his made.  We made this DLO to reflect on our understanding about the light brigade because reading this poem and answering questions allowed us to understand this poem fully.

Something I found interesting was that order given by the commander was misunderstood leading to a big mistake.

Great Shearer’s Strikes

LI: Understanding How Hard it was to Earn Incomes from Shearing Sheep

This week for Reading , we needed to create a DLO explainging the 1891 Shearers Strike, But If you don’t know what is the backstory behind it, let me explain : The 1891 Shearers Strike: Standing Up for Workers’ Rights

What was the 1891 Shearers Strike?

The 1891 Shearers Strike was a significant event in Australia’s history when sheep shearers across New South Wales decided to take a stand for their rights. They wanted better pay and working conditions, and when their demands weren’t met, they chose to go on strike. This meant they stopped working in the shearing sheds, refusing to shear any more sheep until their requests were taken seriously.

Ancient Time Tools

LI: To explore how our ancestors measured time.

We needed to research and create a DLO that explains to someone about ancient timekeeping devices like the sundial, clepsydra (water clock) and hour glass (sand clock).

Somthing I learnt about each one, The first sundial was made around 3500 BC with examples, one of them being shadow clocks from Egypt Valley of Kings which was 5,500 years ago.  The clepsydra is a time tool that was invented around the 1500 BC after it is improved by the greeks, but the oldest one found dated back between 1353 to 1391 BCE.  The hour glass evolved from ancient sand clocks in the 14th century BCE, it was a key timekeeping device for navigators measuring time at sea when water and pendulum clocks were unreliable.

Imagery Of Imagination

For reading this week we needed to create a mood board of the poem “Child Coming Home from the Store”  that pays attention to sensory details. Then we needed the labeled the DLO with different parts of our poem with phrases from the poem that inspired them.

Hone Tuwhare Poem

LI: To understand poetry can transform everyday life into something meaningful.
Poets use various techniques to make this happen, creating specific feelings and moods for the reader.

For reading this week we needed to create a Google vid that show casess one of Hone Tuwhare Poems, the one we have chosen was “Rain”.  First we needed to create images using volcabulary to illustrate more images using prompts to connect to the poem.

Then we needed to record ourselves reading the poem, alternating through each stanza.  Something I found interesting about Hone Tuwhare was that, New Zealanders choose their best-loved poem, placed Tuwhare’s poem Rain at number one.

Rain By Hone Tuwhare

Procedrual Writing

LI: To create a procedural text to tell someone how to do something using a sequence of steps, instructions or actions in a particular order.

Our challenge was to work in our dinosaur research pairs create a prototype of our dinosaur’s skeleton. The challenge was to make teh skeleton of our dinosaur and record the steps we followed. Once we had our first prototype we revised and adapted both the prototype and the instructions.

We used the language features found in a procedural text to help us write clear instructions so that another pair could follow our instructions and create our prototype.

Malala’s key message

We needed to create a poster using Canva or Adobe express including one of Malala’s Key messages being  ‘The pen is mightier than the sword,’ ‘One child, one teacher, one book, and one pen can change the world’.  I chose ‘One child, one teacher, one book, and one pen can change the world’ because I liked the repetition in this message, I also used the colours green and white repersenting pakistan.

Somthing I found interesting is that Malala advocated for women to be able to get an education especially in Pakistan due to the gender bias.

Subtracting Fractions

LI: To subtract fractions

Maths this week, we have been learning to subtract fractions.  First we needed to explore and discuss how to subtract fractions in order to understand,  then needed to discuss as a group and work out on white boards the examples given.  Before needing to complete our individual work in our math books.  This DLO explains and teaches how to subtract fractions.

Tongan Language Week – Word Problems

Our challenge was to create a DLO and make word problems that needed to relate to Tongan language week, for example my question was; If Tupao travels from vava’u to Nuku’alofa how long would it take?, and how long would he have traveled? which included a Tongan name and place.

Somthing I found interesting was that the fastest way to travel from vava’u to Nuku’alofa would take 1 hour and 7 minutes, thats a fast flight isn’t it?
