Malala’s key message

We needed to create a poster using Canva or Adobe express including one of Malala’s Key messages being  ‘The pen is mightier than the sword,’ ‘One child, one teacher, one book, and one pen can change the world’.  I chose ‘One child, one teacher, one book, and one pen can change the world’ because I liked the repetition in this message, I also used the colours green and white repersenting pakistan.

Somthing I found interesting is that Malala advocated for women to be able to get an education especially in Pakistan due to the gender bias.

Subtracting Fractions

LI: To subtract fractions

Maths this week, we have been learning to subtract fractions.  First we needed to explore and discuss how to subtract fractions in order to understand,  then needed to discuss as a group and work out on white boards the examples given.  Before needing to complete our individual work in our math books.  This DLO explains and teaches how to subtract fractions.

Tongan Language Week – Word Problems

Our challenge was to create a DLO and make word problems that needed to relate to Tongan language week, for example my question was; If Tupao travels from vava’u to Nuku’alofa how long would it take?, and how long would he have traveled? which included a Tongan name and place.

Somthing I found interesting was that the fastest way to travel from vava’u to Nuku’alofa would take 1 hour and 7 minutes, thats a fast flight isn’t it?

RISE UP: The Story of the Dawn Raids and the Polynesian Panthers

  • LI: To evaluate (form an opinion) the text and respond to the provocation

We read the text RISE UP: The Story of the Dawn Raids and the Polynesian Panthers and created a DLO that explores and discusses both perspectives of this historical event in our groups. Something I found interesting about this text was the Goverment was the person who looked for Pacfic for help with work and extended their time in New Zealand, but soon after he allowed dawn raids to get rid of them, isn’t that cruel?

Once a Panther

  • LI: To identify the key historical context and events related to the Polynesian Panthers and the Dawn Raids as depicted in the graphic novel.

We read the text Once a Panther and asked to create a comic strip that depicts a scene related to the ideas of prejudice, justice, or taking a stand in today’s world using thought bubbles or dialogue that explains the image.
In this comic strip I chose to relate to the idea “taking a stand in today’s world”.

Something I found interesting about this challenge was that this comic strip I made was inspired about the RISE UP: The Story of the Dawn Raids and the Polynesian Panthers.

Paired Research Challenge

LI: to research questions about your dinosaur including their habitat, diet, predators, and protection.

Our challenge was to create a DLO that tells others about the dinosaur we found when we excavated our dinosaur eggs.
My partner and I found the skeleton of a Beachiosaurus.

Through out our research we have learnt many facts about the Brachiosaurus one of them being:

  • The name Brachiosaurus comes from the Greek language which means arm and lizard.

Something I found interesting was that the Brachiosaurus front legs where way bigger and stronger then its back legs which was the main support due to the ohw heavy the chest and the neck of the Brachiosaurus.

Dinosaur Eggs

  • LI: To understand how scientists discover, record and learn from fossils.

Our challenge was to be palaeontologists which are people who study ancient life by examining fossils.  We then used Adobe express to add and reimage in order to make it more realistic to what a real egg might look like. After that we add things that related to our dinosaur like the habitats to create our image.  My partner and I found the skeleton of a Brachiosaurus, the name Brachiosaurus means “arm Lizard” in Greek.

This Task was fun because we got to use AI to make our own images.

‘Shameful stain on NZ history’: Polynesian Panthers push for dawn raids apology

LI: To form and justify an opinion

We needed to create a DLO of our choice that reflected both sides of the provocation and our opinion.  We explored what a provocation is and why it is important to have an informed opinion when sharing our perspectives.

  • Why is it important for a country to acknowledge difficult or shameful parts of its history, like the Dawn Raids?
  • What does it mean for something to be a ‘shameful stain on New Zealand history?
  • How can stories like the ones in this article help us to connect with people from different backgrounds or generations?
  • Should the Government of today (2021) have apologised for the dawn raids of yesterday? (1970s)

Trace and Body Fossils

LI: To understand how scientists know so much about dinosaurs.

LI: To recognise different types of fossils and how they are formed.

For inquiry we are learning about dinosaurs, paleontologist and different types of fossils.  We have learnt about body and trace fossils and something I have learnt about trace and body fossils that trace fossils are preserved remains of the ancient animal and its skeleton, these fossils help us learn what it was like over a 100 million years ago. Trace fossils are finds of life or animals which includes footprints, trails tooth marks and fossilised animals, droppings and other different finds.

Mary Anning

  • LI: To create a DLO that tells Mary Annings story from her perspective story.

Before we take part in our own dinosaur dig LS2 were challenged to capture the story behind Mary Anning, a pioneering fossil hunter and paleontologist during the early 19th century.  Mary Anning did discover the first almost complete skeleton of a plesiosaur, a marine reptile, in 1823.   She also nearly completed the ichthyosaur skeleton another marine reptile.  Who was also knowned as on of the first paleontologist.
